They're just 25 km apart, share the same coast and the same swells — yet Montañita and Ayampe are opposite universes. Choosing well defines your trip.
Montañita: party, surf and 24/7 energy
Montañita is one of South America's great party hubs. Six blocks of bars, hostels, tattoo shops and music from noon until 4 a.m. Its right-hand point break is genuinely good. It's perfect if you want nightlife, crowds and a backpacker scene.
Ayampe: the exact opposite
30 minutes north, Ayampe is the reverse: days of surf and nights of silence. No nightclubs, no buildings — just ocean, forest and the sound of the waves. It's the town where you can hear a pin drop in the square. Ideal for families, couples, serious surfers and anyone here to disconnect.
What about the surf?
Both have good waves. Montañita offers a powerful point break that can get crowded. Ayampe is a consistent, far less busy beach break — better for progressing without fighting for waves. Many surfers stay in Ayampe and day-trip to Montañita.
Prices and lodging
Montañita has everything from very cheap hostels to hotels. Ayampe is smaller and, for its size, a touch more exclusive: fewer beds, more eco-cabins and whole houses. If you travel as a group or family, a whole house in Ayampe delivers value that's hard to beat.
The verdict
Want to party and skip sleep? Montañita. Want to sleep with the windows open to the sound of the sea and wake up to empty waves? Ayampe. Best of all: base yourself in Ayampe and have Montañita 30 minutes away for the night you feel like going out.
