There's a reason Los Frailes shows up on every list of the best beaches in Ecuador: a crescent of light sand and turquoise water framed by forest-covered cliffs, without a single building, restaurant or vendor in sight. It's protected inside Machalilla National Park — and from Ayampe, it's about 20 minutes away.
Why it's so special
Because it sits inside a national park, Los Frailes remains essentially untouched. The contrast of the water against the dry-forest green — and the total calm, no music, no jet skis — makes it unlike any other beach on the coast. It's the perfect full-day plan if you're based in Ayampe or Puerto López.
What to do at Los Frailes
- Swim and float: the bay is sheltered and gentle most of the year.
- Hike the lookout trail: it passes Tortuguita and La Playita (dark-sand) beaches and ends at a viewpoint with one of the country's most photographed panoramas.
- Snorkel along the rocky ends of the bay when the water is clear.
- Birdwatch in the dry forest along the trail.
How to get there from Ayampe
The park entrance is on the Ruta del Spondylus, just before Puerto López (about 17 km from Ayampe):
- By bus: take any bus toward Puerto López and ask to get off at the Los Frailes entrance; from there, local mototaxis or a ~30–40 minute walk to the sand.
- By car or taxi: you can drive to the parking area, a few minutes' walk from the beach. Easiest option with kids.
Access is controlled — visitors register at the park booth, and hours are daytime only. Arrive early to make the most of the day and enjoy the beach at its emptiest.
What to bring (and what not to)
- Water and snacks: there are no vendors inside the park — that's what keeps it pristine.
- Sunscreen (ideally reef-safe), a hat, and comfortable shoes for the trail.
- A bag to carry all your trash back out.
- Skip the pets and speakers: it's a protected area.
The perfect base: Ayampe
Los Frailes has no hotels — that's its charm. The natural base is Ayampe: sleep by the ocean in a quiet town, with Los Frailes, Puerto López and Isla de la Plata all under half an hour away.
